Gospel Luke 10:38-42

38 Now it came to pass as they went, that he entered into a certain town: and a certain woman named Martha, received him into her house.

39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sitting also at the Lord's feet, heard his word.

40 But Martha was busy about much serving. Who stood and said: Lord, hast thou no care that my sister hath left me alone to serve? speak to her therefore, that she help me.

41 And the Lord answering, said to her: Martha, Martha, thou art careful, and art troubled about many things:

42 But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Welcome Jesus into your life.

  • Jesus has been going through the villages and towns with his disciples preaching the gospel.
  • He enters the town of Bethany where he is then received by Martha into her house. Saint Augustine says …
    • The maidservant receives her Master,
    • the sick woman her healer and Saviour,
    • the creature her Creator,
    • she who is to be fed in spirit … Him who must be fed in the flesh which she does to honour him.

The hospitality of Martha is to be praised, for she welcomes Jesus who was hated by the chief priests and scribes. In welcoming Jesus Martha received God as well into her home and family, who blessed her and her whole household and blessed her with eternal glory. Abraham in welcoming guests entertained Angels clothed in human form, from whom he received the promise of Isaac and then of Christ.

Jesus appeared to Martha as she was dying and rewarded her hospitality and welcomed her into his heavenly home. “Come, my most beloved guest, for as thou didst receive Me in thy house, so shall I receive thee in my heavenly home.” It is related in her Life according to Saint Antoninus, that Jesus Himself was present at the burial of Saint Martha. So Jesus honours those who honour Him.

Jesus does not criticize Martha’s hospitality. Rather he helps her to understand that she should perform this work of charity to please God. The one thing necessary is to know, love and serve God. Or as Jesus said Love God and love your neighbour.

Welcome then Jesus into your heart and life today so he will welcome you into heaven upon your death. Show kindness and love to others for in doing so you do it to Jesus. Whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren you do to Me.
