Our Lady of Sorrows
O God, who willed that, when your Son was lifted high on the Cross, his Mother should stand close by and share his suffering, grant that your Church, participating with the Virgin Mary in the Passion of Christ, may merit a share in his Resurrection. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Mary is Queen of Martyrs because she herself has suffered spiritual martyrdom. Her sorrow is especially connected with her compassion for her Son Jesus and his sufferings for our salvation. And lastly Mary suffers for us in her care and concern for our salvation.
Traditionally the sorrows of Mary has focused on seven sorrows.
the prophecy of Simeon;
the flight into Egypt;
having lost the Holy Child at Jerusalem;
meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary;
standing at the foot of the Cross;
Jesus being taken from the Cross;
at the burial of Christ.
